Volunteerism is an influential tool for engaging both long-term and new Canadians in helping to overcome the challenges faced by new Canadians. Volunteering benefits both society and the individual volunteer by providing the opportunity to give back to the community and ultimately encouraging sustainable community development. Volunteerism provides the opportunity to gain experience and learn new skills. The aim of CBFY Volunteer Program is twofold: build the capacity of the organization by engaging newcomers and mainstream volunteers while simultaneously providing volunteer opportunities to newcomer immigrants and refugees who want to give back, learn new skills, increase their social capital, gain experience, obtain professional references in Canada and be a part of a team.
Every year, CBFY volunteers provide programming and administrative support. They provide support in administration, facilitating afterschool programs, tutoring and mentoring youth, assisting adults in English classes, assisting newcomer families in the reception centres of school boards, supporting in special events, and others.
